Former international referee Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez has claimed that nine out of 10 Spanish referees are Real Madrid supporters.
Iturralde, who added that he personally roots for Athletic Club, also stated that the other 10 percent of the officials support Barcelona.
“Whether Barcelona like it or not, 70 percent of the Spanish population, excluding Catalonia, support Real Madrid,” he told ‘El Larguero’.
“Nowadays there are more people who go for Barcelona because young people have seen Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona titles.
“But before the Lionel Messi era, how many people supported Real Madrid in Spain?”
Asked to breakdown the referees’ preference for Real Madrid or Barcelona, he didn’t bite his tongue.
“It’s 90 to 10,” he said, in favour of Real Madrid.
