Child marriage is one of the cultural practices that African countries are finding it hard to fight against.
The practice has become part and parcel of our culture and because of poverty, it has forced some families to give their daughters away at an early age.
An 11-year old girl is seeking for a divorce from her 38-year old husband. The young Sudanese girl was in primary school when her father gave her away to the man she is married to.
In Sudan, a girl can get when married when she reaches ‘maturity’ which is 10 years old according to the country’s 1991 Personal Status Law of Muslims.
The young girl told CNN in an interview that she was abused by her husband on several occasions.
In the interview, the 11-year old girl said when she went to tell her father what her husband was doing to her, he sent her away.
Albeit her father feels sorry for what her daughter is going through, he told CNN that will not prevent him from giving his six other daughters away.
In Sudan, getting married early is seen as an honour for women who are not married are stigmatized.
The young girl wants her divorce to be finalized so that she can go back to school.
