People change. It’s just a fact of life. By the time you’re 40, you discover that, over time, you’ve evolved into a completely different person that when you were at the ripe age of 27.
1. The marriage was based on physical chemistry.
You’re sharing a life together, not just a bedroom. “Young people often put too much credence in sex,” says Dr. Andrea Herber, a Boston-based psychologist with The Inside Compass, “and that’s something they may come to regret later.” Intimacy is crucial, she stresses, but it’s one of many factors in a successful bond. 2. They didn’t want to disappoint their partner.
Sometimes, a partner may have felt doubts about an impending marriage only to proceed because of a fear of conflict. “They’ll say ‘I didn’t know how to say no,’ or ‘I didn’t know how to let that person down,’ ” says Herber, leading them to feel pressured into the decision.
3. They married only to experience a life change.
For some, getting married can be a one-way ticket to getting out of dodge, Dr. Herber says. Whether it’s your parent’s basement, a college dorm, or the messy apartment you share with one too many musicians, getting hitched can be a mode of escape. When you’re young, “you don’t always know how to pick a partner that truly supports your dreams,” says Herber, “because you haven’t fully fleshed them out yourself.”
5. They entered a relationship that doesn’t satisfy their needs.

Marriage brings many changes: along with the ring and possible new name, it ushers in a new, more responsible, phase of life. “When you’re maturing it’s all about you, you, you—your career, your friends, your social life,” says Fran Greene, a relationship coach and the author of Dating Again With Courage and Confidence and the upcoming The Secret Rules of Flirting. “So it’s weird,” she continues, “when one night you tell your friend, ‘Hey, let’s go to dinner,’ and then all of the sudden it’s like, ‘Oh, I have a husband at home. Getting married is supposed to be the be-all-end-all of relationships; do it once, and you’re done. So when a couple gets married young, they may regret not testing the waters a bit more before settling on a partner. “You don’t have that much to look back on when you’re young, to compare,” says Greene.
