According to reports, police in the Sekyere East District of the Ashanti region have arrested around 40 students from the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational School in Asante Asokore. The students were arrested for vandalizing school properties following poor results on the WASCCE exam scored by their predecessors in the last election in 2022.
According to the assembly member and Coordinator for Free SHS in the District, Ebenezer Opoku, the incident occurred on Sunday, January 22, 2023. He reported that six cars were destroyed by the students, including four belonging to the school and two private vehicles belonging to teachers. In addition, properties worth thousands of cedis were also destroyed, including the bungalows of the senior house mistress, her car, the school’s notice board, stores, and food stored there.
The principal’s room was saved from destruction by security doors but the dining hall was not spared in the chaos. Many of the things that were destroyed are beyond repair, including the principal’s vehicle provided by the government.
Opoku also reported that the Ashanti Regional Education Director and the District Director of Education for Sekyere East have visited the school to assess the situation. However, he added that calm has been restored on the campus with the help of the police.
