Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association has indicated they might embark on a strike.
According to reports, they have gotten the information that Ghana Health Service wants to deduct 1% from the salary of workers in the health service.
The deduction will be used to make insurance for them so that should any member happen to be in a situation where the National Health Insurance is not applicable, then the member can rely on that insurance to pay the bill.
According to the nurses, they have a clause in their condition of service which indicates that should any employee find it difficult to pay his or her hospital bill or the National Health Insurance does not cover the illness the member is suffering, the employer must pay 50% of the bill.
Also, they stated that Registered Nurses and Midwives Association have a fund that they tap into should any member need assistance.
Furthermore, they do not know if nurses who are part of a different association will also have 1% of their salaries deducted. If they are going to deduct the money, then they should deduct the same amount from all workers.
They have therefore threatened to go on strike should they go ahead with the new policy.
