Mario Balotelli appears to have been left without a club after being released by his hometown club, Brescia.
Club president Massimo Cellino sent formal notice to the Italian forward this past weekend to inform him that his contract at the Stadio Mario Rigamonti was to be terminated.
“I thought as captain of his hometown club he should have done much more,” said Brescia’s current boss Diego Lopez to La Gazzetta dello Sport, though neither the club nor player have commented on the reports that his contract has been cancelled.
“He should and could have done more. It’s a pity, but each person is the master of their own destiny.
“He took one direction and the team took another.”
The decision was taken after Balotelli failed to report for training, though he had presented the Rondinelle with a doctor’s note which said he had to take a week’s rest because of stomach problems.
Lopez said that the forward hadn’t been following the training regime given to him by the club during the coronavirus lockdown and that he was out of shape.
“He’s not at the same level as the other players,” explained Lopez, “so he had been training alone.”
Balotelli had returned to Brescia last summer and was given an emotional welcome.
In his 19 Serie A appearances this season he managed five goals for the side who sit rock bottom of the table.
