A 27-year old woman has been arrested in Canada for pretending to be a witch and conning a 67-year old man in what authorities are calling an “evil spirit blessing scam.”
Samantha Stevenson scammed the man $450, 000 and has been charged with “Pretending to Practice Witchcraft” according to a release from the York Regional Police in Ontario.
Stevenson pretended to be a witch and convinced the man she could cast evil spirits from him if only he transfers a large sum of money to her.
The unidentified man sold his house and sent the money to Stevenson who during the scheme used the name, Evanna Lopez. She later requested for more money which she said she was going to use to “ward off the spirits.” The man sold his car and used credit cards to pay Stevenson.
After her arrest, Samantha Stevenson was charged with fraud, possession of property obtained by crime and pretending to be a witch.
In Canada, people can be charged if they “fraudulently portray themselves as having fortune-telling abilities or pretend to use witchcraft, sorcery, enchantment or conjuration in order to obtain money or valuables from a victim.”
