Liberian President George Oppong Weah has donated $10,000 to the family of Christian Atsu, the former Newcastle United and Chelsea winger who recently passed away in Turkey following an earthquake.
Weah, who is the only African footballer to have won the Ballon D’or award, made the donation through former Black Stars player Kwame Ayew.
Ayew visited Atsu’s family in Ghana on February 22, 2023, accompanied by members of the Liberian community in the country.
Atsu’s body was recovered from the rubble of his destroyed apartment following the earthquake in Turkey on February 6, after he was trapped for over a week.
The 31-year-old was crowned best player at the 2015 AFCON, and his family has not yet announced plans for his burial and funeral.
The donation from President Weah is a touching gesture of support for Atsu’s loved ones during this difficult time.
