The Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) has confirmed a 2.8 magnitude earth tremor occurred in parts of Accra yesterday. In a press release, the GGSA stated that the tremor was “slightly felt in High Street, Ridge and other parts of Accra Central” and occurred at 9.49 am, with the epicentre located 1.5km offshore near James Town in Greater Accra Region.
Isaac Kuuwan Mwinbelle, Acting Director-General of the GGSA, noted that the recorded magnitude indicates that the tremor was minor and not expected to cause damage. He also emphasised that such occurrences are natural and difficult to predict.
The GGSA urged the public to remain calm and go about their normal activities, stating that it is committed to monitoring these events and informing the public appropriately to ensure public safety and minimise risk. The Authority is also undertaking education and sensitisation of the public on awareness and response during earth tremors.

This news comes in the aftermath of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck southern Turkey on February 6, leading to the loss of more than 50,000 lives. The event has sparked scrutiny of building codes and construction practices in Turkey.
