Karela United FC achieved an impressive win over Hearts of Oak at Crisby Awauh Memorial Park, bouncing back from a previous defeat. The Aiyinase team scored three goals against the Accra-based club, who received their most significant loss of the 2021 season.
Karela’s goals were scored by Owusu Boakye, won by Konadu Yiadom, and Richard Berko’s late goal, which sealed the victory for the home side. The win also helped Karela leapfrog to the 11th position in the league table, after sitting just two points above the drop zone, which dealt a severe blow to Hearts of Oak’s title hopes.
Fatawu Mohammed, a former Hearts of Oak captain, had a significant impact on the game, creating two of Karela’s three goals. Boakye headed in Fatawu’s cross to give Karela the lead in the 17th minute, before Konadu Yiadom converted another Fatawu cross to increase the scoreline.
Hearts were dealt a significant blow after defender Rashid Okine was sent off for a last-man foul on Abdul Ayeh on the stroke of halftime, leaving them with ten men for the remainder of the game. Karela dominated the game in the second half and eventually secured the win after Berko expertly finished off a counterattack in the 87th minute.
Karela United will face King Faisal in week 24 of the league, while Hearts of Oak will look to recover from the defeat when they take on Accra Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium.
