Police in Abuakwa, with assistance from the Revenue Protection Unit of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), have apprehended a 54-year-old man, John Fofie, for allegedly installing fake meters for residents of Kunsu in the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region. Fofie has been accused of replacing customers’ post-paid meters, which had outstanding debts, with counterfeit meters in the community. The ECG officials installed new post-paid meters in the homes of affected people, but routine checks uncovered the fraudulent activity. The ECG’s revenue mobilization drive helped to retrieve GH¢50 million within two weeks, with the objective of retrieving all of the GH¢1.2 billion owed by customers to the power distribution company.
The exercise, which began approximately two weeks ago, has also uncovered other illegal activities, according to officials. After detecting the issue, victims were questioned, resulting in the arrest of John Fofie as the individual responsible for installing the fake meters in the area. Checks conducted in his room discovered seven counterfeit post-paid meters, which were all confiscated by ECG officials.
The Ashanti Regional Director of the Revenue Protection Unit of the ECG, Ing Kofi Danso, stated that they are on the lookout for other culprits, including the individual who illegally transferred the meters. The company’s surveillance over the previous months has revealed that some unscrupulous people have been attempting to infiltrate the stable electricity distribution network with counterfeit meters. These illegal meters have been affixed with stickers to appear as if they came from the Electricity Company of Ghana.
Danso also explained that the ECG would continue to work diligently to apprehend and prosecute perpetrators or anyone with intentions to undertake such criminal activities. In addition to the seven fake post-paid meters found in Fofie’s room, officials discovered three meter bypasses. The culprits were unavailable, and the police have requested that they report to the police station. Officials have also detected 50 counterfeit prepaid meters at the Race Course Market in Kumasi.
The ECG is conducting numerous exercises in the Ashanti Region in response to the rising number of cases of illegal power usage in the area.
