Reports indicate that two people were shot and another person brutalized by police in Sefwi Bekwai, a town in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region. The male and female victims were taken to Green Shield Hospital in Sefwi Bekwai for treatment after suffering injuries of varying degrees. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, April 10, when local youth gathered at the Bekwai police station to demand the release of a 20-year-old Pragyia rider named Kwabena Gyapong. Gyapong had allegedly been brutalized by a police patrol team and detained.
According to reports, Gyapong was riding his tricycle towards Sefwi Sorano off the Sefwi Dwinase road when police signaled for him to stop for a search. However, Gyapong resisted the search, leading to a heated exchange with the police officers. In the midst of the argument, Gyapong allegedly headbutted one of the officers, leading to his immediate arrest.
After news of Gyapong’s arrest spread, local youth, particularly Pragyia riders, gathered at the Bekwai police station to demand his release and attack the police. The angry crowd reportedly pelted the police with stones, prompting them to respond with gunshots.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions between law enforcement and the public in certain areas of Ghana. The use of excessive force by police officers has been a subject of public concern in recent times, with calls for reform and greater accountability. The incident in Sefwi Bekwai is likely to add to these concerns and fuel demands for action to prevent such incidents in the future.
