Bofoakwa Tano, a football club based in Sunyani, has made a remarkable return to the Ghana Premier League after spending 16 years in the National Division One League. Their promotion to the top flight was confirmed following a victory in the Division One League – Zone One – playoff final against Eleven Wonders at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
In a tightly contested match, Bofoakwa Tano emerged as the winners after a penalty shootout that ended 7-6 in their favor. The game had initially ended in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of regulation time and an additional 30 minutes of extra time.
Bofoakwa Tano took the lead in the 7th minute through Leslie Aryeetey’s converted penalty. However, Eleven Wonders quickly responded in the 49th minute with a goal from Zakaria Osman, leveling the score. Despite both teams’ efforts, the deadlock could not be broken during extra time, leading to the decisive penalty shootout.
With nerves running high, Bofoakwa Tano held their composure and emerged as the victors, winning the penalty shootout 7-6. This triumph seals their return to Premier League football in Sunyani, following their relegation from the top flight in the 2006/07 season.
Bofoakwa Tano joins Nations FC and Heart of Lions as the third team to secure promotion to the Ghana Premier League for the upcoming 2023/24 season. Their successful campaign in the Division One League playoffs signals a new chapter for the club, as they prepare to compete among the best teams in Ghana once again.
