In a surprising turn of events, Accra Hearts of Oak, who have consistently maintained a position in the top six throughout the majority of the 2022/2023 Ghana Premier League season, now face the possibility of relegation on the final matchday.
Having experienced a poor run of form, the Phobians have slipped to 11th place on the table with 44 points, leaving them with a slim three-point margin above the relegation zone and just one game remaining.
Over their last 10 league games, Hearts of Oak have suffered six defeats, recorded one draw, and achieved three victories, including a recent 2-1 home loss to Real Tamale United at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, June 4, 2023.
This season has proven to be a nightmare for the Rainbows as they have struggled to maintain consistency in their wins, with their poor form coinciding with the most critical period of the season.
Now, the 21-time league champions find themselves teetering on the edge of relegation from the top tier, with their fate hinging on a few potential scenarios.
At present, King Faisal and Kotoku Royals have already been relegated, leaving one more spot to be determined on the final day of the league.
Six clubs, including Hearts of Oak, Karela United, Accra Lions, Legon Cities, Tamale City, and Great Olympics, will be hoping for favorable results to escape being the third club to occupy the remaining relegation spot.
The league table for these clubs currently sees Hearts of Oak in the lead with 45 points, followed closely by Karela in second place with 44 points, Accra Lions and Legon Cities tied in third place with 44 points and 43 points respectively, Tamale City in fifth place with 42 points, and Olympics in sixth place with 42 points.
As it stands, Olympics currently occupy the third relegation slot as the final games approach.
Therefore, despite the slim margin, Hearts of Oak could face relegation if they lose their final game while the remaining five teams secure victories in their respective matches.
The 2021 League champions will face Berekum Chelsea in an away match, where even a draw would be sufficient to ensure their survival in the league.
In the final games, Legon Cities will host Samartex, Karela United will visit Kotoku Royals, Tamale City will face Medeama (who are on the verge of winning the league with just one more win needed), Great Olympics will host Nsoatreman, and Accra Lions will travel to Bibiani to play Gold Stars.
