Nana Dede Klottey, the Suhum-Nifa Ankobiahemaa, has revealed the reason behind her decision to personally hand her son over to the police after he informed her of his girlfriend’s death caused by his own actions.
In an interview following the court case involving her son and the state at the Koforidua High Court on June 21, Nana Dede shared the details of how she persuaded her son to return home and wait for her when he called to inform her about the incident.
She emphasized that her son, Kwabena, and the deceased, Abena, were in a romantic relationship and were accustomed to quarreling and reconciling. However, she expressed her bewilderment regarding the circumstances that led to Abena’s death.
“It has happened, and I know he was in a relationship with the girl. When it happened, I was attending an event, and he called me to inform me,” Nana Dede explained.
“However, because I advocate for peace, I instructed him not to flee but to go home. I immediately left Accra and returned to Koforidua. Personally, I handed him over to the police because I seek peace,” she added.
As a mother, Nana Dede stressed that she would not be happy if such an incident occurred to her. She acknowledged that Kwabena and Abena had a turbulent relationship, and anyone who tried to mediate between them would be seen as an outsider. She considered both of them as her own children.
Nana Dede further revealed that Abena often complained about her son’s behavior during their disagreements. Reflecting on the tragedy, she expressed her grief and appealed to God for mercy. She acknowledged that Abena was someone’s daughter and a human being, which motivated her decision to hand her son over to the police. She stated that she could not shield him from the consequences.
“My intention is for the two families to find unity so that we can provide a final resting place for Abena,” Nana Dede concluded.
