The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced that the current power supply disruptions in certain areas of the country are a result of a gas shortage. In a statement released on July 7, 2023, GRIDCo explained that the deficit in power capacity is due to a limited gas supply.
GRIDCo, which operates the National Interconnected Transmission System, informed the public that there is a shortfall in thermal power generation caused by restricted gas supply from the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant (GPP) and the West African Gas Pipeline (WAPCo).
As a consequence, there is a 650MW supply gap during peak hours, which will affect consumers in certain parts of the country, according to the company’s statement.
GRIDCo has taken steps to address the issue by working towards restoring gas supply from the Atuabo facility. It assures affected customers that power will be restored as the situation improves.
In the meantime, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), a state-owned power distribution company, has indicated that it expects a full restoration of power by 9 pm on Friday, July 7, 2023. The ECG’s optimism is based on assurances from the Ghana National Gas Company that they are actively working to resolve the gas supply shortfall as quickly as possible.
