In the Twifo Praso District, justice was served as a landlady, Gladys Owusu, faced the consequences of her actions in the Magistrate Court. The charge against her was no trivial matter, as it involved a severe violation of public health and sanitation regulations.
Gladys Owusu had chosen to connect her household’s raw faecal matter system pipe to the public drainage system, causing a foul discharge into the environment. Such actions posed a significant risk to the community’s well-being, and it was Emmanuel Oforson, the diligent Environmental Health Director of the Twifo Atti-morkwa District Assembly, who presented the case against her.
In the court proceedings presided over by the esteemed His Worship Maxwell Ofori Kpodo Esq., Gladys Owusu pleaded guilty to the charges, acknowledging the gravity of her offense. The court, recognizing the seriousness of the matter, handed down a verdict that would hopefully serve as a deterrent to others. The landlady was ordered to pay a fine of Gh¢600, and failure to do so would result in her serving three months in prison with hard labor.
This judgment came in line with Section 56 of the Public Health Act 2012(851), which strictly forbids causing any form of sanitary nuisance. The court’s decision served as a reminder that adherence to sanitation laws was vital for the well-being of the entire community.
Speaking on behalf of the Twifo Atti-morkwa District Assembly, Emmanuel Forson stressed the importance of improving sanitation in the area. To achieve this, the Assembly had heightened its enforcement of sanitation by-laws. Mr. Forson called upon the public to actively participate in keeping their surroundings clean, thereby supporting the government’s efforts in ensuring better sanitation for all.
A stern warning was issued to potential offenders that the law would not hesitate to bring them to justice if they engaged in any acts detrimental to public health and the environment. It was a clear message that breaking sanitation regulations would not go unpunished, and the district was committed to upholding the rule of law to protect its residents.
