Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has taken a significant step towards challenging the incumbent president, Kurt Okraku, by obtaining nomination forms for the upcoming elections.
George Afriyie, who previously held the position of vice president under Kwesi Nyantakyi, is making his second attempt to unseat Kurt Okraku. Despite his unsuccessful bid for the GFA presidency four years ago, Afriyie is determined to try again to secure the leadership position.
Afriyie’s spokesperson, Akyereko Frimpong, shared insights into the development, stating, “George Afriyie, who boldly declared his intention to restore Ghana football to its former glory and address the challenges it currently faces under Kurt Okraku’s leadership, has taken the necessary steps to contest the elections as per the guidelines provided by the Election Committee of the Ghana Football Association.” Frimpong further explained that Afriyie has diligently fulfilled the requirements, including paperwork, endorsements, and other prerequisites. Once all the necessary documentation is gathered, Afriyie will submit the materials to the GFA for the electoral process.
In the meantime, all 10 Regional Football Association (RFA) chairpersons have rallied behind the incumbent president, Kurt Okraku, expressing their endorsement for his bid to secure a second term in office. This unified support for Okraku’s re-election comes from the RFA chairpersons representing various regions including Ashanti, Western, Volta, Upper East, Upper West, Northern, Greater Accra, Central, Brong Ahafo, and Eastern.
Kurt Okraku originally assumed the role of GFA president in 2019, triumphing over George Afriyie and four other contenders in a competitive election. As his first term in office approaches its conclusion in October, the GFA has already outlined a roadmap for the forthcoming elections, setting the stage for a pivotal moment in Ghana’s football administration.
