A 31-year-old food vendor has appeared before the Gender-Based Violence Court on charges of allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl in Awudome, a suburb of Accra.
Emmanuel Bimpong, who faces a defilement charge, has entered a plea of not guilty.
The presiding judge, Mr. Kwabena Kodua Obiri Yeboah, granted Bimpong bail in the amount of GHC 50,000, requiring two sureties. The defendant is scheduled to reappear in court on September 20.
The court also instructed the prosecution to submit their disclosures.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Simon Tekpor, stated that the complainant in the case is a fashion designer residing in Awudome Estate. Bimpong, the accused, is a resident of Awudome Roundabout, Accra.
According to the prosecution, investigations revealed that the victim lived with her guardian in Awudome Roundabout, where the guardian operated a provision shop. Bimpong’s business was located near the victim’s guardian’s shop.
The prosecution’s account further stated that in May 2023, around 9:00 pm, while the victim’s guardian was at church, Bimpong allegedly lured the victim into a corner of his shop and engaged in sexual intercourse with her. He purportedly warned the victim not to disclose the incident to anyone.
On June 16, 2023, the victim reportedly confided in her sister, recounting the incident to her. Subsequently, the complainant became aware of the matter and reported it to the police. A medical report was issued for the victim to undergo examination and treatment at a hospital.
Police investigations led to Bimpong’s arrest. The court proceedings will continue as scheduled.
