A 23-year-old level 200 student of the University for Development Studies (UDS) named Anyebas James has been sentenced to 12 months of imprisonment with hard labor by the Nkwanta District court for defrauding a businessman in the Nkwanta South Municipality.
The convict pleaded guilty to the crime and was subsequently convicted. According to the police inspector, Bright Nana Nkansah, the incident occurred on July 10 of this year when the convict posted a Haojue DR motorbike for sale on his WhatsApp status and Facebook wall.
A businessman named S.K Kwasi expressed interest in buying the motorbike and contacted the convict. They agreed on a price of GHC 8,500 and the convict requested that the money be paid to his mobile money (Momo) account to facilitate the transfer of the motorbike to the buyer.
After the full payment was made, the convict asked for an additional GH¢1,100 to facilitate the registration of the motorbike, bringing the total to GH¢ 9,600. However, the convict failed to fulfill his part of the agreement and went into hiding in Nalerigu.
The buyer reported the incident to the Nkwanta Police station, leading to the convict’s arrest at his hideout. Subsequently, he was brought before the court, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to 12 months in prison with hard labor.
Additionally, the convict’s family raised GH¢4,000 to partially repay the money he had taken, which was presented to the court. The conviction serves as a deterrent to the convict and others who may engage in similar fraudulent activities.
