Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, made a striking announcement during a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 25, 2023. He firmly declared his intent to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential elections and concurrently announced his immediate resignation from the NPP.
Mr. Kyerematen expressed his profound disappointment with the present state of the NPP, a political entity he had been closely associated with since 1992. He lamented that the NPP he once cherished had undergone a profound transformation, characterized by the dominance of what he labeled as “unscrupulous party apparatchiks” and shadowy power brokers working behind the scenes.
“While it has long been my ambition to ascend to the presidency of Ghana under the NPP banner, the party has evolved in a manner that no longer aligns with my vision,” stated Mr. Kyerematen as he justified his decision to embark on the independent path to the presidency.
Alan Kyerematen unveiled his strategy to create and lead a novel political movement named the “Movement for Change in Ghana.” He symbolically chose the Monarch Butterfly to represent this movement, signifying change, transformation, hope, and optimism. He underscored the pivotal role of Ghana’s youth in propelling this new political initiative, considering that the youth accounted for a substantial portion of the country’s registered voters.
