The National Communications Authority (NCA) has declared the sale and operation of Starlink in Ghana as illegal. Starlink, a satellite-based internet service provider, offers connectivity to underserved areas and competitively priced services in more urbanized regions.
According to the NCA, Starlink has not obtained the necessary license in Ghana, nor has any of its equipment been type-approved. This lack of authorization violates Section 3(1) of the Electronic Communications Act 2008, Act 775, which states that “a person shall not operate a public electronic communications service or network or provide voice telephony service without a license granted by the Authority.”
The NCA emphasized that the public should avoid patronizing equipment or services claiming to be from Starlink. Furthermore, individuals engaged in the sale or operation of Starlink services are directed to cease and desist immediately.
The NCA assured the public that it will continue to uphold fair participation and competition in the market to protect both licensees and consumers. Starlink, operated by SpaceX, is a satellite internet constellation that provides coverage to over 60 countries and has plans to offer global mobile phone service after 2023.
