The Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Frank Annoh Dompreh, has suggested that the dismissal of Black Stars head coach, Chris Hughton, may be necessary for Ghana to secure victory in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The coach, who took charge in March, has faced increasing pressure due to a lack of positive results and criticisms of the team’s style of play.
Speaking in Parliament, Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP Frank Annoh Dompreh called on the Sports Minister to take decisive action to avoid potential embarrassment for Ghana in the tournament hosted in Cote d’Ivoire next month. Dompreh expressed concerns about the team’s current performance, emphasizing the need for proactive measures.
“Minster, you’ll agree with me that these days our Black Stars is becoming a pale shadow of itself,” Dompreh remarked. He urged the Sports Minister to consider all options, including a change in coaching staff, to ensure that the Black Stars perform well in the competition.
“We can’t just go there and be part of the number of teams. We’ve always said that we are four-time champions; this thing is becoming old-time glory. We want to do something for ourselves, and minister, I know you can do it. Please help, and let’s get our Black Stars in good shape,” he added.
With the Black Stars set to open their AFCON campaign against Cape Verde on January 14, the urgency for effective preparations and performance is highlighted in these calls for potential changes in leadership. The upcoming tournament will test the team’s ability to compete at the highest level, and decisions made now may impact their success on the continental stage.
