Over 150 students of Ejisu Senior High Technical School in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti Region find themselves without shelter following a violent heavy rainstorm on Saturday, March 2nd, 2024 evening.
The male dormitory block bore the brunt of the storm’s fury, exacerbating the discomfort already felt by the school due to overcrowded male dormitories.
Lasting nearly two hours, the intense downpour wreaked havoc on seven classrooms, causing extensive damage to learning materials. Regrettably, neighboring schools, Ejisu Krapa Basic School and Ejisu Experimental Basic Schools, were also not spared from the storm’s wrath.
Samuel Oduro Frimpong, the Ejisu Municipal Chief Executive, conducted an assessment of the damage caused by the rains. He assured the public that the school would not be closed despite the adversity.
“I contemplated sending the students home for their parents to attend to them, but we also have to consider the academic calendar. Therefore, we will convene with the school’s head and teaching staff to address the issue in the best interest of both teachers and students. We aim to ensure that students do not miss out on learning opportunities scheduled for this semester. We want to reassure parents that we are also parents, and we are committed to ensuring that students have suitable accommodations before the term ends.”
Kwabena Owusu, the Municipal Education Director, acknowledged the severity of the damage caused by the storm. However, he assured students and parents that measures were being taken to address the situation promptly.
“The situation is dire, but we are actively working to provide alternative accommodation for the affected students. This morning, in collaboration with the headmistress, we consoled the student population and assured them of our support. We have urged them to cooperate with us as we work to secure suitable lodging for them. The affected building is one of the oldest structures in the school. We are currently assessing the damage and will seek assistance from the Member of Parliament, Hon. John Kuma, to facilitate the necessary repairs to enable students to return to a safe learning environment.”
