A seven-year-old boy named Ebenezer Nyamekye Mensa tragically drowned on Sunday, October 26, 2025, after falling into a water-filled manhole pit in the Abuom Redtop area near the West Hills Mall in Accra.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reported that a rescue team from the Kasoa Fire Station responded to an emergency call and arrived at the scene around 3:45 p.m. They located and recovered the boy’s lifeless body from the flooded pit, and his remains were handed over to the police before being taken to the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Hospital morgue.
Eyewitnesses say the child had been playing in the vicinity with his brother when the accident occurred, though the exact circumstances leading to his fall into the uncovered excavation remain unclear.
In a statement, the GNFS extended heartfelt condolences to the family and used the incident to underscore the serious dangers posed by open pits, manholes, and other unprotected excavations in communities. They called on parents, guardians, and local residents to be vigilant, ensure that hazardous pits are covered or barricaded, and to report such risks to relevant authorities without delay.
