The Bekwai Circuit Court in the Ashanti Region has sentenced three men—Peter Boadi (also known as “Kwao Ziggy”), Daniel Kwaku Owusu and Eric Kwaku Danso—to 20 years in prison each. The trio were found guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery, contrary to the provisions of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The case arose from an armed robbery attack that took place on the night of 29 April 2024 at Bene-ne-Bene near Jacobu. Two Chinese nationals and two Ghanaians—identified as Joseph Eghan (39) and Joseph Boadu (29)—were returning from loading excavators in the forest when they were accosted by four armed men. The assailants stole two iPhones, GHS 7,000 in cash, and forced one of the Chinese victims to transfer GHS 30,000 via mobile money to a phone number registered in the name of Esther Opoku.
Subsequent investigations by the Ghana Police Service led to the arrest of Esther Opoku on 15 June 2024 at Obuasi. She admitted receiving the GHS 30,000 transfer, withdrawing the funds and passing them to Boadi, Owusu and Danso in exchange for GHS 1,000. Police later apprehended Danso at Fiankoma and Owusu at Patrensa near Konongo on 19 June 2024; both suspects confessed to their roles. Boadi was arrested on 30 September 2024, and a search of his residence uncovered a loaded foreign Bruna pistol, ammunition and a locally-manufactured firearm.
After the trial, the court found all three guilty and handed down the 20-year sentences. They have since been transferred to the Kumasi Central Prison to serve their terms.
