Egypt and Al Ahly legend, Mohamed Aboutrika has been sentenced to one year in prison for tax evasion.
However, the Egyptian legend has been given an option to pay a fine of 20, 000 Egyptian Pounds ($1, 115) for the prison sentence to be suspended.
The verdict was given in absentia as Aboutrika has been living in exile in Qatar and working as a sports analyst for beIN Sports since he retired from football in 2013.
According to the court, Aboutrika failed to pay taxes a 710, 000 Egyptian Pounds -about $ 39, 500- advertising deals he signed with telecommunication and carbonated drink companies from 2008 to 2009.
Though he is still popular among soccer fans his country, the man who was nicknamed ‘The Prince of Hearts’ and ‘The Magician’ has also been branded a traitor for his links to the Muslim Brotherhood.
He has denied ever funding the Muslim Brotherhood but in 2015, his assets were frozen and in 2017, the three times African Cup winner was placed on a no-fly list.
Aboutrika is yet to comment on the sentence handed to him.
