The Accra Sports Stadium will shut its gates for a much-needed overhaul after Ghana hosts Chad in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on March 21, 2025.
Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams stated this in an interview with TV3, admitting that the venue that has idle since November 2024 ; is “virtually in a mess” and no longer fit for purpose.
The upcoming match, the stadium’s first in four months, will be a bittersweet farewell. Engineers have deemed the upper stand toward Ghana’s Independence Square as a safety hazard and barred fans from the section.
“Following our assessment, it has integrity issues. The floodlights fare no better [they are] held together by rusted knobs that threaten to fail. Everything is rusty. We have to close the Accra Sports Stadium to refurbish it and bring it up to standard,” Kofi Adams said.

With renovations looming post-March, fans hope this closure marks the start of a revival for a venue that’s hosted Ghana’s football dreams since 1960; not just another rust-stained delay.
