Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, accompanied by members of the Minority in Parliament and key figures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Friday, August 1, visited the family of the late Ghanaian Highlife icon, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, to commiserate with them.
The visit to Daddy Lumba’s residence was marked by emotional scenes as the former President shed tears upon being formally informed of the musician’s passing. Daddy Lumba died on Saturday, July 26, at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness.
In a heartfelt tribute, Akufo-Addo described Daddy Lumba as a national treasure whose music left an indelible mark not only on Ghana’s entertainment industry but also on his own political journey.
He recalled how the musician’s campaign songs contributed significantly to his popularity across the country.
“I’m here to commiserate with you. His death is painful. Accept my condolences; you have truly lost a great person. He contributed immensely to my political career. If I start today, I won’t be able to finish talking about the great work Lumba did for me,” Akufo-Addo told the family.
“My name is popular across the country due to the songs he composed for me. The songs resonate across all political divides. I showed appreciation to him when he was alive. I ensured he was awarded because he did massive work,” he added.
The former President promised to support the family during the funeral and expressed a strong desire to be included in all arrangements. He also assured the widow of his continued support for the children of the late musician.
“Daddy Lumba was one of the greatest musicians Ghana has ever produced. His name will forever remain a part of the country’s history.
“I will fully support the funeral arrangements, and I kindly ask that I be included in all related activities. I would be deeply saddened if I were left out. I truly appreciate all he did for me—thanks to the campaign songs he composed in my honour, my name will endure in Ghana. Those songs will be played for generations to come. To the widow, please don’t worry—we will stand by you and support the children.”
Accompanying Akufo-Addo were former Chief of Staff Frema Osei-Opare, former ministers, members of the Minority caucus, MPs, and prominent NPP figures, including Gabby Otchere-Darko.
As part of his gesture, Akufo-Addo donated cartons of drinks to the bereaved family.
Daddy Lumba is widely regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest musicians, with a career spanning over three decades, marked by timeless hits and influential collaborations.
