The president of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will on Sunday, 8 September be in Kumasi to watch the game between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak as both clubs compete for the President Cup.
This is the first time the President’s cup is not being played in July. In the previous editions, the game has always been played on 1 July to mark the country’s Republic Day celebration.
Last year, Ghana League Clubs Association (GhaLCA) could not organize the match due to the Number 12 documentary which exposed the corruption in Ghana football by Anas Amereyaw Anas.
Nonetheless, when it was last played in 2017, Kotoko beat Accra Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
The game had to be played twice as the referee ended the first game due to a heavy downpour on the 2nd of July. After 67 minutes, the game was 1-1. The second game was played the following day and Kotoko won 4-1 on penalties after the game ended 0-0 in 90 minutes.
The president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was represented by this vice, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the last time it was played in 2017.
His speech is likely to be based on the aftermath of the Number 12 documentary as he has not had the opportunity to talk about it since it happened.
