Algeria has decided to withdraw its bid to host the 2025 and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, as announced by the President of the Algeria Football Federation, Walid Sadi, on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.
This announcement came just before the anticipated revelation by the CAF (Confederation of African Football) Executive Committee of the host country for the 2025 and 2027 AFCON tournaments. The official announcement from CAF was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 27, in Cairo, Egypt.
Algeria’s withdrawal from the bidding process leaves several other nations in the running to secure the hosting rights for the 2025 edition of AFCON. Notable contenders include Morocco, Zambia, and a joint bid put forth by Nigeria and Benin.
Reports suggest that Morocco is the frontrunner to win the hosting rights for the 2025 AFCON. Meanwhile, for the 2027 AFCON, Senegal, Botswana, and Egypt have expressed their aspirations to host the prestigious tournament.
In addition to these bids, a joint effort has been initiated by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania to secure the hosting privilege for the 2027 edition of the AFCON. The competition among these nations to host the tournament promises to be intense, as each seeks the opportunity to showcase African football on the grand stage.
