During a Media Professionals Training on Africa/Ghana Relations, former Ghanaian Ambassador to China, Anani Demuyakor, shared a memorable experience hosting former President John Agyekum Kufuor during his tenure. Ambassador Demuyakor recalled some of the confessions made by the esteemed statesman.
Ambassador Demuyakor explained that when President Kufuor planned a visit to China, he wanted to ensure an exceptional experience for him. As part of this effort, he arranged for a visit to Shanghai, a city renowned for its status as a global center for finance, business, economics, research, science and technology, manufacturing, transportation, tourism, and culture.
Upon arriving in Shanghai, President Kufuor was awestruck by the city’s magnificence. Ambassador Demuyakor revealed a notable confession made by President Kufuor, stating, “Is it China? New York is nowhere near Shanghai – the skyscrapers.” The delegation accompanying President Kufuor was astonished by his praise for Shanghai, as some held the perception that China was still lagging behind.
Addressing the gathering at the Media Professionals Training, Ambassador Demuyakor stressed the importance of embracing China’s presence in Ghana and Africa at large. He stated, “China is here to stay. China is rising whether we like it or not, so let’s try and educate our people about China… China is a must-go-place. The situation is that, I don’t think you can discard it.”
The event, organized by the Africa-China Centre for Policy and Advocacy (ACCPA) and the Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana (CIUG), brought together journalists from various sectors to deepen their understanding of China’s role in Africa’s development and its impact on the continent. The focus of the training was to equip media professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills to accurately report on China-related issues.
