The National Democratic Congress (NDC) experienced a major shakeup in their leadership in parliament, with several key positions being changed and replaced. These changes were not well received by some supporters of the party, particularly in Tamale. On Wednesday, January 25, 2022, some irate supporters of the NDC stormed the premises of Radio Tamale and inflicted harm on the Deputy General Secretary of the party, Mustapha Gbande, during a live interview, Ghana Web reports. The incident happened as Gbande was defending the changes in leadership, stating that they were necessary for victory in the 2024 elections.
According to reports, just as Gbande was finishing his interview, some supporters believed to be from the camp of ousted Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, attempted to force their way into the studio but were repelled. The angry supporters then waited outside and when Gbande came out, they assaulted him before he could be whisked into his car.
The decision by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NDC to remove Haruna Iddrisu has been expressly rejected by supporters of the party in Tamale. On Tuesday, a coalition of NDC supporters in Tamale gave the party an ultimatum to reverse the decision or face their wrath. Meanwhile, close to fifty Members of Parliament (MPs) from the NDC have signed a petition calling on the party leadership to reverse the changes made to their leaders in parliament.
