A video capturing an incident involving a ride-hailing service driver and a group of female passengers has gone viral, raising concerns about unruly and unprofessional behavior. The incident, which took place in Kumasi and was documented by GhanaWeb, depicts the driver of a Kia Morning car allegedly throwing out a birthday cake belonging to the passengers following a dispute over fares.
According to one of the passengers narrating the incident in the viral video, the group had gathered to celebrate a friend’s birthday and had hired the ride-hailing service for their transportation needs. However, during the journey, the driver abruptly refused to proceed, citing the poor condition of the road.
In response, the passengers insisted that the driver should complete the trip as they were close to their destination. They were unwilling to pay the fare, arguing that the driver had already added an extra charge to the originally quoted amount. The driver, in turn, became enraged by their demands and, shockingly, decided to take out his frustration on their birthday cake, smashing it on the road.
Expressing her disappointment in the driver’s behavior, the passenger in the video stated, “Sorry to say, but I didn’t know that Bolt drivers in Kumasi are that uncivilized. We took a friend out for her birthday, and on our return, he refused to finish the journey after we arrived here, claiming that the road was bad. When we refused to get down from the car, he added even more charges to the fare. Now, he’s saying he won’t continue, and as a result of our refusal to pay, he threw our cake on the ground.”
Portions of the video reveal a heated confrontation between the irate driver and the frustrated passengers, with one of them pointing out that the fare the driver had bargained for was GHC 70, while the ride-hailing app had charged only GHC 42.
