Aisha Huang, also known as the ‘Galamsey Queen,’ has been found guilty of all charges brought against her by the state. The Accra High Court sentenced her to four years in prison on Monday, December 4.
Huang faced charges related to illegal mining operations without a license, facilitating unlawful participation in mining, employing foreign nationals illegally, and re-entering Ghana post-deportation.
Throughout the trial, Huang consistently denied the charges. Her legal team advocated for a fine and deportation during the sentencing, considering her year-long incarceration during the trial.
The state’s case accused Aisha Huang of engaging in illegal small-scale mining activities, known as ‘galamsey.’ The prosecution claimed she gained “notoriety” for these activities across the country. Aisha Huang faced four charges, including undertaking mining operations without a license, facilitating unlawful participation in mining, employing foreign nationals illegally, and entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry.
