In a recent development reported by the Chronicles Newspaper on June 15, 2023, a 45-year-old businesswoman has been remanded into police custody for falsely presenting herself as the landlady of a warehouse she had rented, and subsequently renting it out to another trader.
The accused, identified as Peace Kyerewaa, had rented the warehouse located in Tudu for a monthly fee of GH¢ 3,500.00 from Alhaji Suleman Yushua in July 2021. However, Kyerewaa proceeded to lease the same space to another individual for a period of five years, charging them GH¢ 80,000.00.
The complainant, known as Patient, discovered the deception and promptly reported the case to the police on May 18, 2023, leading to Kyerewaa’s arrest. Subsequently, Kyerewaa appeared before an Accra High Court on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, where she pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretenses before His Honour Samuel Bright Acquah.
The court was briefed on the matter, stating that Kyerewaa, residing in Manhea, Accra, had offered to rent out the Tudu warehouse to Patient on December 1, 2022, for a total sum of GH¢ 80,000.00, covering a period of five years. Patient paid the amount in cash based on the forged tenancy agreement presented by Kyerewaa.
On April 30, 2023, both Kyerewaa and Patient were invited to a meeting with the apparent original landlord, Alhaji Suleman, regarding the warehouse. It was during this meeting that Patient was informed that Kyerewaa was not the legitimate owner of the space, contrary to her claims.
The prosecuting officer revealed in court that Alhaji Suleman Yushua had indeed rented out the warehouse to Kyerewaa on July 1, 2021, with a monthly rent of GH¢ 3,500.00. Further investigations uncovered that Kyerewaa had assumed the role of a landlady, fabricating a five-year tenancy agreement, signing it, and providing it to the unsuspecting complainant.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Kyerewaa has been remanded into police custody while awaiting further court action.
