Ghanaians on social media, particularly Twitter, have voiced their opinions suggesting that Black Meteors captain Daniel Afriyie Barnieh should be excluded from Ghana U-23’s upcoming matches at the ongoing 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations. The demand comes in response to Barnieh’s disappointing performance against Congo at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The former Hearts of Oak striker was substituted at halftime, making way for Emmanuel Yeboah, who scored two goals and provided an assist, ultimately helping Ghana secure a 3-2 victory in their U-23 AFCON opener against Congo.
In addition to Barnieh, Dreams FC player Sylvester Simba, who was also replaced at halftime, faced criticism for his below-par performance. Some individuals blamed goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim and the defense for conceding two late goals, accusing them of falling asleep during crucial moments.
On the positive side, two-goal hero Emmanuel Yeboah and Ernest Nuamah, who also found the back of the net, received praise for their exceptional performances during the match.
Head coach Ibrahim Tanko also earned accolades for his halftime double substitution, which proved instrumental in turning the game in Ghana’s favor.
With the win, Ghana finds themselves tied on 3 points with Morocco in the group standings, with goal difference being the only factor separating the two teams. Congo and Guinea currently sit in the third and fourth positions, respectively.
The Black Meteors will now face Morocco in their second match on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.
