The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has temporarily lifted the ban on 21 players who were banned by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for match-fixing in the game between Ashanti Gold and Inter Allies.
The players were granted a stay of execution by CAS after the Fédération Internationale des Associations de Footballeurs Professionnels (FIFPro) office in Ghana’s effort to get the GFA to lift the ban failed.
Ashanti Gold won the game 5-0 at home but the talking point of the game was when Allies’ Hashmeed Musa came off the bench to score two deliberate own goals.
Musa told the media after the game that he scored the goals to foil the fixed match.
After months of investigations, the GFA banned the players while the clubs were demoted to Division Two. At the time of the ban, Ash Gold was playing in the Premier League while Inter Allies were playing in Division One.
Mohammed Zakari, Richard Acquaah, Shaibu Taufiq, Danso Wiredu Mensah (goalkeeper), Alex Aso, Abdul Kadir Mohammed, Isah Ali, Felix Abuska, and Andy Okpe who were in Inter Allies’ matchday squad and failed to appear before the investigative committee, were handed two years ban each for their involvement in the game.
Ashanti Gold’s Stephen Owusu Banahene, Empem Dacosta Ampem, Frank Akoto, Agyemang Isaac Opoku, Amos Kofi Nkrumah, Eric Esso, Moses Kwame, and Solomon Afriyie were banned 24 months ( 2 years) each while, Samed Mohammed and Seth Osei received a 30-month (2 years, 6 months) each.
Emmanuel Owusu, Mohammed Bailou, Amos Addai, and Paul De Vries Asare were banned for 48 months (4 years) each.
However, Asante Kotoko’s Richmond Lamptey who played for Inter Allies in that season is yet to have his ban lifted as his name was not included in the list FIFPro Ghana sent to their international office. The midfielder is being helped by his current club to get his ban lifted.
