The fight against illegal mining popularly called Galamsey has been long overdue. Although the President has indicated he will be lifting the ban soon, it is not clear exactly when he will lift the ban.
However, there are reports some people are still into galamsey and the recent arrest of some Chinese men confirmed it.
Last week, the Minister for Chieftaincy, Kofi Dzamesi at an event at Amansie in the Ashanti Region was told to tell the President that some people in his government are into galamsey, pointing out Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly called Chairman Wontumi and the CEO for Forestry Commission, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie also called Sir John as the ones doing the illegal mining.
“We are disappointed in the NPP government”, the chief said. The Chief told the Minister that they have brought soldiers to guide them and as a result, it has been difficult to stop them from the activity.
“They told us they were here to do land reclamation”, he added.
“Almost two weeks later, we found out they are doing galamsey”.
The Chief of Abuakwaa Kobro told the Minister to tell the President that if he wants to fight galamsey, he must stop those in his government first.
