The La District Court in Accra has taken decisive action against 24 Nigerian commercial sex workers who were caught soliciting sex in the Osu suburb. The accused individuals, whose names include Favour David, Nancy Victor, Angel Isaiah, Gloria Uyi, Chukwuma Olivia Chinyere, Jennifer James, Matilda Samuel, Ogbona Success, and Ibeh Mary, were among those convicted by the court after pleading guilty to the charge of soliciting or importuning by a prostitute.
Other individuals involved in the case were Berry Michael, Angel Mbah, Eze Jane, Jenny Daniel, Joy Timothy, Comfort James, Eze Kelly, Lilian Ikpomwosa, and Joy Bolle. All of them admitted their involvement in the offense, leading to their conviction on their own pleas.
In response to the nuisance caused by the activities of these commercial sex workers in the Osu community, the court also issued a deportation order against the convicts, stating that they should be sent back to their country, Nigeria. The responsibility for ensuring their deportation was assigned to the Police, who were instructed to work in collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service to facilitate the process.
According to Police Chief Inspector Doris Darko, who presented the facts of the case, the convicted individuals were all Nigerian nationals. Over time, the Osu suburb had been grappling with the presence of these sex workers, leading to disturbances and discomfort for the residents.
On July 23, 2023, at around 10:00 PM, the Police conducted an operation to crackdown on the activities of these commercial sex workers and successfully arrested them from various locations within Osu while they were soliciting and importuning as prostitutes. During the course of the investigation, the individuals admitted to committing the offense, as stated in their caution statements.
