Three individuals, including a customs officer, have been accused of conspiring to steal 75 kilograms of gold bars worth USD4,303,234.00 belonging to GND Global Trading LLC.
The accused – Emmanuel Dwamena, a Ghanaian customs officer, Abdul Karim Lakoh, a Sierra Leonean businessman, and Seth Dzamesi, a Ghanaian businessman – have denied the charges against them. Their accomplice George Asamoah is still at large.
The complainants in the case were citizens of the United Arab Emirates and Australia, and Lakoh was one of the people who sold the gold to them. He promised to help them transport the gold through Ghana to Dubai.
However, when they arrived at Kotoka International Airport in Ghana, Lakoh managed to leave the airport and meet up with Dzamesi and Asamoah, who were waiting in a vehicle to pick him up. Dzamesi then stole the bag containing the gold and kept it in his Toyota pickup.
The complainants were taken to a supposed customs bonded warehouse in Accra and then abandoned at the airport. Lakoh was subsequently arrested, but Asamoah is still on the run.
The accused have admitted to hatching the plan in Sierra Leone with the help of Ghanaian accomplices. They are scheduled to appear in court on March 27, 2023, and efforts are being made to apprehend the other accomplices.
