Hearts of Oak’s head coach, Martin Koopman, has refrained from shouldering the blame for the team’s disappointing performance in the Ghana Premier League during the 2023/24 season. The Phobians have encountered considerable difficulties and have only secured one victory in six games.
In their most recent match, Hearts of Oak played to a goalless draw against Samartex FC at the Accra Sports Stadium.
In a post-match interview, Coach Martin Koopman attributed his team’s scoring struggles to a broader issue he observed in Ghanaian football. He likened the inability to find the net to the recent difficulties faced by the Black Stars, the national team.
According to Koopman, Ghana lacks wingers and strikers who can consistently score goals, and this issue has affected not only Hearts of Oak but also other local clubs. He emphasized, “Look, there is a deep problem in Ghana football. The problem is also with the national team. The wingers and the strikers cannot score goals, and I keep saying, and it is not only with us but it is happening in the national team and other clubs.”
The Dutch tactician continued, “We will do everything to win games, and they must come and look at how we work with the boys. I think I am not the problem, and also not the players because they gave everything, but we need experience and goals, and then we can move beyond the problem.”
However, recent reports suggest that Coach Martin Koopman’s position might be in jeopardy if Hearts of Oak’s performance does not improve in their upcoming four matches.
