An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a 21-year-old driver’s mate, Absalon Toboase, to eight years imprisonment for defiling a 13-year-old girl in two different guest houses in Accra. Toboase had pleaded not guilty to the two counts of defilement, but the court presided over by Christina Cann found him guilty after a trial.
The court took into account the gravity of the offence and the fact that Toboase had no previous criminal record in deciding on the sentence.
According to the prosecution, led by Superintendent of Police Agnes Boafo, the victim is a trader who lives in Mamprobi, while Toboase resides in Lapaz. The victim had met Toboase on Facebook and the two had been friends for some time before Toboase proposed love to her and arranged to meet her.
On January 7, 2023, Toboase took the victim to a guest house in Lapaz where he had sex with her and promised to marry her. A month later, the victim packed some of her belongings and went to stay with Toboase. The following day, Toboase took the victim to another guest house in Lapaz and had sex with her again.
The victim’s absence from her house was reported to the police by the complainant, and the victim was found with Toboase at Mamprobi. Toboase was subsequently arrested and a Police medical report form was given to the complainant to seek medical care for the victim.
