The Ghana Police Service has arrested 27 male suspects in a major anti-illegal mining (galamsey) operation at Ankaase Gyadam, near Asamang Tamfoe in the Eastern Region.
The intelligence-led exercise, carried out on Friday, July 25, 2025, targeted several illegal mining sites where the suspects were found actively engaged in unlawful activities.
According to a police statement, some individuals attempted to obstruct and attack officers during the operation, wielding machetes and other weapons in an effort to resist arrest.
The operation also led to the seizure of significant equipment, including:
11 excavators
1 bulldozer
1 pump-action shotgun
3 saloon vehicles
1 Mitsubishi pickup truck
1 pick loader
Several water pumping machines and other mining tools
All suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the seized items have been placed under secure protection.
The operation is part of the government’s continued efforts to clamp down on illegal mining, which has caused widespread environmental destruction across many parts of the country.
