The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected several institutions, including the Ho Airport in the Volta Region, for outstanding debts amounting to GH¢63,000.
The disconnections occurred on the first day of the company’s revenue mobilization exercise in the Volta and Oti Regions, which aims to retrieve about GH¢292 million within a month. The regional office of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Ho Technical University, and the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) Training Academy in Kpetoe were also disconnected for similar reasons.
According to Benjamin Obeng Antwi, the Volta Regional Public Relations Officer of ECG, Ho Technical University owed GH¢402,000, CEPS training academy owed GH¢80,000, and the GRA office owed GH¢55,000.
The Ho Technical University paid GH¢200,000 after negotiations with ECG and has been given until the end of March to settle the remaining amount. The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) made an upfront payment of GH¢1 million out of GH¢1.4 million owed and was given a week’s deadline to pay the outstanding balance of GH¢400,000.
ECG is urging its customers to prioritize paying their bills to enable the power sector to continue operating. The company is appealing to customers to make payments before the disconnection team visits their premises. Payments can be made at any bank, through mobile money, by dialing *226#, or by downloading the ECG PowerApp.
The ECG hopes that this revenue mobilization exercise will help the company collect outstanding debts from state agencies and private institutions such as the Ho Teaching Hospital and the National Communications Authority.
