Former National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joshua Hamidu Akamba, has announced plans by the opposition party to implement stringent monitoring measures for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Akamba revealed that one of the measures will involve the installation of secret cameras on trees to oversee election proceedings and ensure accountability for those who may instigate chaos.
Despite assurances of deploying drones for monitoring, Akamba emphasized the party’s intention to supplement these efforts with their own monitoring measures.
During an interview with Kasapa FM, monitored by GhanaWeb, Akamba elaborated that the installation of cameras on trees would aid in capturing any security personnel who mistreat citizens during elections, holding them accountable for their actions.
He stated, “The military and other security personnel should advise themselves about the 2024 elections. We have heard about drones, but we will install secret cameras on trees to monitor the elections. So that if a security personnel shoots someone, he/she will be captured and arrested afterwards.”
Akamba cited the violence witnessed during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections as a motivating factor behind this decision, expressing skepticism regarding the conclusive resolution of the matter.
He remarked, “With what happened at the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency elections, where they set up a commission, do you think that is a conclusive matter? The guys who were shot are still there.”
The upcoming 2024 elections will see the NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, competing against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and other candidates. The general election is scheduled for December 7, 2024.
