The residents of Ewusiejoe in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region are in desperate need of immediate assistance following extensive flooding caused by heavy rainfall.
Ewusiejoe, a farming community located near the River Butre on both sides of the Takoradi-Tarkwa highway, has historically experienced minor flooding during heavy rains. However, the downpour on Wednesday and the subsequent overflow of the River Butre resulted in the complete submersion of the entire community, displacing numerous residents.
Affected individuals were forced to evacuate their homes last night and seek refuge in a few elevated structures that were spared by the floodwaters. The flooding has caused significant damage to household belongings, shop inventories, and infrastructure, with some makeshift containers and structures being swept away.
Mr. John Odoom, the Assembly Member for the Ewusiejoe electoral area, expressed deep concern over the unprecedented level of flooding and attributed it to illegal mining activities (galamsey) in the Mpohor and Benso areas, which are the source regions of the River Butre.
Traders in the area lamented the loss of their merchandise, as shops and homes have become inaccessible due to the need to wade through the floodwaters in order to salvage a few remaining items.
