A 45-year-old man has been nabbed by the Awutu Bereku District Police Command in the Central Region for posing as a lawyer and defrauding innocent individuals of monies running into millions of Ghana cedis.
Chief Inspector Stephen Tamaklo of the Police Command, who confirmed the arrest to Citi News said, the accused – Justice Nhyira took GH¢5,000 from a family (Ablordey family) in the community under the pretext of assisting them win a land litigation case at the Awutu Bereku District Court.
“He told the Ablordey family that he was a lawyer and could help them win their land litigation case at the court. Initially, he requested for GH¢3,000 as down payment and later came for additional GH¢1,000. The family also promised to give him four acres of land and GH¢2,000 in addition but they noticed his strange behaviour and called the police to intervene,” Chief Inspector Stephen Tamaklo said.
He further explained that the Ablordey family of Awutu Bereku on Monday, June 24, 2019, lodged an official complaint that the Police station leading to the arrest of Justice Nhyira.
“The family made an official complaint at the station and we arrested him”.
Chief inspector Tamaklo further explained that after taking the money, Justice Nhyira failed to follow the Ablordey family to court after realising their suspicion.
“Upon further interrogation, Justice Nhyira admitted that he was not a lawyer but was in need of money which was the reason for his actions.”
Meanwhile, the Awutu Bereku District Court presided over by Justice Emmanuel Behume has granted Justice Nhyira bail of GH¢6,000 with two sureties.
He is to reappear in court on July 18, 2019.
