A 63-year-old farmer named Joseph Begyina has been sentenced to ten years of imprisonment with hard labor by a Cape Coast Circuit Court for the defilement of a 7-year-old girl.
The victim, Esther Duodu, is a class three pupil at Nyamebekyere D/C Basic School and resides with her father, Yaw Duodo, and their family in Assin Bereku Nyamebekyere.
Prosecuting Chief Inspector Gilbert Adongo presented the case before Her Ladyship Dorinda Smith-Arthur in the court. He explained that Esther’s father is a cocoa farmer who sells local gin, which Joseph Begyina (the convict) regularly purchases from him, walking a distance of about 500 meters.
According to the prosecution, on Saturday, April 29, around 3:00 a.m., Joseph Begyina went to purchase local gin from Duodu. After being served, Duodu asked Esther to take care of the drinks while he went to work on his farm.
After approximately five minutes of work, Duodu returned to the compound to retrieve something and noticed that his daughter was not where the drinks were being sold. He called out to her, wondering why she had left the drinks outside. Upon hearing her father’s voice, Esther emerged from the room.
The prosecution further explained that during questioning, Duodu saw Begyina exiting Esther’s room while zipping his shorts. Alarmed by the situation, Duodu lifted Esther’s dress and discovered that she was not wearing any pants.
Duodu questioned his daughter, and Esther disclosed that Begyina had sexually assaulted her on two occasions: once in the room and twice in the cocoa farm.
Upon receiving this information, Duodu reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of Joseph Begyina. During the investigation, Begyina admitted in his caution statement to having had sexual intercourse with Esther. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was convicted by the court based on his plea.
A medical examination was conducted on Esther, and she received the necessary treatment. Following a thorough investigation, Joseph Begyina was charged with the offense and brought to trial.
