Ghanaians have been divided over the expected increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) which is expected to be announced when the Finance minister, Ken Ofori Atta goes to Parliament this week.
The increase, according to sources will help the government to fund its policies including the Free Senior High School, as well as, other policies to help develop the country.
However, the minority in Parliament has warned the government to increase the tax as it will worsen the already unbearable livelihood of Ghanaians.
Some Ghanaians are in support of the argument the opposition is making as they are saying it will make life hard for them.
Also, those in against the increase in tax are of the view that the government promised to reduce the tax and as a result, they do are not expecting the government do the opposite.
Some of the people we spoke to noted that the government must review the policy before they make an announcement.
Meanwhile, those who support the government are also saying due to the numerous policies the government has introduced, the government should increase the tax so that they have enough money in the state’s coffers to implement all the policies.
Some compared the taxed developed countries pay to help them implement policies and noted that if we really want Ghana to develop, then we must follow suit.
The government, moreover, has also defended the new expected increase in VAT although it has not been made official.
